A tourist in South Africa’s Mkuze nature reserve was stunned by a unique interaction between antelopes, crocodiles, and lions. A male nyala antelope was stalked by a lioness in the water, where it faced the threat of hungry crocodiles lurking nearby. The antelope managed to escape the lioness by running into the water, but it soon found itself caught off guard by a crocodile attack.
Despite being surprised by the attack, the antelope managed to evade the crocodile and run back to shore. In a desperate situation, the antelope decided to fight back, charging straight at the lioness with its long horns. The lioness felt threatened by the antelope’s horns and eventually gave up and left.
Nyala antelopes are native to southern Africa and are herbivores that weigh between 55-140 kg. They have horns that can grow up to 83 cm long and are prey for lions, leopards, crocodiles, and other predators in the region. This encounter showcases how prey must navigate dangerous territories to evade predators in order to survive in the animal kingdom.
