In a significant development for the sports and athletics scene in Bexar County, the commissioners have approved a $5 million investment into the construction of a new facility at UTSA. Known as the “Roadrunner NEST,” this state-of-the-art sports complex will be accessible to residents and will serve as the home for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams at the university.

The Roadrunner NEST is expected to cost a total of $35 million and will be built on UTSA’s main campus starting in January 2025. The City of San Antonio has also invested an equal amount, reflecting a commitment to providing opportunities for community members to engage in sports and recreation activities. With about half of UTSA’s students coming from Bexar County, this facility is expected to be a hub for sports and athletics in the area.

County Commissioner Grant Moody emphasized that the Roadrunner NEST will not only benefit UTSA but will also provide valuable resources for the entire community. The facility will be available for public use, hosting competitive events and youth sports in addition to serving as the home for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams at UTSA. Once completed, UTSA has committed to covering the facility’s annual operating costs of $500,000.

This joint investment by Bexar County and San Antonio reflects their commitment to providing opportunities for residents to participate in sports and recreation activities. With its cutting-edge facilities, top-notch coaching staff, and talented student athletes, the Roadrunner NEST is set to become one of the premier destinations for athletes in South Texas.
