Microchip Technology has recently acquired Neuronix AI Labs in order to enhance its capabilities for power-efficient, AI-enabled edge solutions utilizing field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). The acquisition will enable Microchip to leverage Neuronix AI Labs’ neural network sparsity optimization technology, which allows for reduced power consumption, smaller device sizes, and fewer calculations while maintaining high accuracy for tasks like image classification, object detection, and semantic segmentation.

As a result of this acquisition, Microchip’s stock price increased by 1.36% in premarket trading, rising to $86.81. This move further solidifies Microchip’s position as a leader in developing advanced and efficient solutions for edge computing and artificial intelligence applications.

Bruce Weyer, corporate vice president of Microchip’s FPGA business unit, believes that incorporating Neuronix AI Labs’ technology will lead to increased power efficiency for FPGAs and SoCs in intelligent edge systems that utilize AI and machine learning algorithms. This, in turn, will allow systems designers to create and deploy smaller hardware that was previously limited by size, thermal, or power constraints.
