In 2023, the Holmaneset project in Norway achieved significant milestones, including a grant of €203.7 million from the European Union (EU) for the green ammonia plant and securing renewable power for the project through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Statkraft, a renewable energy supplier. This progress reflects Fortescue’s commitment to advancing sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solutions in the region.

In early 2024, Fortescue awarded Tecnimont, a business unit of Italy’s Maire, the front-end engineering design (FEED) work for the plant. The tasks included designing electrolyzer integration, the air separation unit for nitrogen production, the ammonia production plant, and storage and ship loading facilities. Tecnimont is also expected to submit an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) proposal for the plant’s realization as part of the agreement.

Now KBR has entered into a contract with Fortescue to provide its green ammonia technology K-GreeN for the Holmaneset project in Norway. Under this contract, KBR will offer technology licensing and proprietary engineering design services for the 675 metric tonnes per day grassroots green ammonia plant in Norway. The company aims to play a significant role in developing sustainable energy value chains and decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries by providing its zero-carbon green ammonia technology that aligns with Fortescua’s ESG objectives.

Jay Ibrahim, President of KBR Sustainable Technology Solutions expressed his excitement about working with Fortescua on this project stating “We are thrilled to be partnering with Fortescua on this groundbreaking project that will help accelerate decarbonization efforts in hard-to-abate industries.” He added that “KBR’s expertise in providing innovative technology solutions will be critical in helping Fortescua achieve its ambitious goals.”
