In 2023, a team of scientists from the National Council of Humanities, Sciences and Technologies, and its Public Center El Colegio de la Frontera Sur discovered the Taam ja’ blue hole in Chetumal Bay, Quintana Roo to be the deepest of its kind in the world. The measurements identified it as reaching 420 meters below sea level. Despite this impressive depth, there is still more to explore within the blue hole.

This discovery was made using the Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CTD) profiler instrument which helped scientists understand the characteristics of the water column inside the blue hole. The morphology of Taam ja’ is similar to that of a cenote with dominance of water with brackish or marine characteristics and being completely submerged. The team identified significant variations in temperature and salinity, different water layers, and transition zones. These characteristics suggest that there may be underground connections between the bay and the Caribbean Sea through the hole.
