Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has recently launched the first PhD program in Financial Technology (FinTech) in the country, highlighting its commitment to advanced education and research in the rapidly growing sector. This new program sets WPI apart as the only university in the country offering degrees at all levels in this field.

The financial services industry has experienced significant changes in recent years with the emergence of online payment services, mobile banking, and cryptocurrencies. FinTech has quickly become one of the fastest-growing industries in the global economy, with forecasts predicting the creation of 1.5 million new jobs and some of the highest salaries in the tech industry. As a result, there is an increasing demand for PhD graduates with expertise in financial technology, both in industry leadership roles and academia.

WPI’s introduction of a PhD program in FinTech demonstrates its commitment to innovation at the intersection of business and technology. WPI President Grace Wang emphasized that graduates of this program will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of financial technology education and the financial services sector, serving as leaders and innovators in both academia and industry. The program will also provide valuable research opportunities for students, as firms in the financial industry seek to develop new operations and products leveraging emerging financial technologies.
