Finland is taking a significant step towards sustainable nuclear waste management by planning to bury spent nuclear energy rods underground for long-term storage. Nuclear energy, a low-carbon energy source, harnesses the power within the atom, making it an essential part of the world’s energy mix. However, nuclear waste management is crucial due to its radioactivity, which can pose safety and environmental risks. This type of waste can remain toxic for thousands of years, highlighting the importance of careful waste treatment to protect people and the environment.

Finland’s Onkalo project is a groundbreaking move in reducing nuclear waste. Over the past two decades, Onkalo has been constructed to serve as the world’s first permanent storage facility for nuclear waste. The facility has the capacity to hold 5,500 tons of nuclear waste and will receive all highly radioactive waste from Finland’s nuclear plants throughout their operational lifetimes. Onkalo’s impact goes beyond Finland’s borders, with the International Atomic Energy Agency recognizing it as a project that will revolutionize nuclear waste management. The facility is a decade ahead of other countries facing similar challenges and features the innovative KBS-3 design, developed in collaboration with the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company. This design uses a multi-barrier system to enclose nuclear waste inside a copper box, covered with clay, and buried deep within stable bedrock to minimize the risk of radiation exposure and environmental pollution.

Furthermore, Onkalo showcases how technology can play a crucial role in addressing environmental issues. Innovative solutions like the “Octopus” molecular crystal and waste-eating bacteria offer potential ways to collect by-products from nuclear reactors and even decompose waste to produce energy, making nuclear energy a more sustainable option. As Finland advances towards the operational stage of Onkalo, it sets a global precedent for nuclear waste management practices.
