The Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence (BIGAI) introduced a new humanoid named Tong Tong at the Frontiers of General Artificial Intelligence Technology conference in January. This little girl, who means “little girl” in Chinese, is powered by artificial intelligence and was presented as the first of its kind. The virtual prototype revealed that Tong Tong can replicate the behavior of a three to four-year-old person and has the ability to continuously improve through learning and interactions with humans.

Researchers working on the project claim that Tong Tong displays a level of emotional engagement never before seen in other AI models. It can interpret, identify, and communicate emotions like happiness, anger, and sadness, and respond appropriately to these emotions expressed by others. Tong Tong is said to possess a mind and desires to understand common sense taught by humans, discern right from wrong, express attitudes in various situations, and have the power to shape the future through the TongOS2.AGI operating system and the TONGOL2.0 language learning program.

Zhu Shongchun, director of BIGAI, emphasized the importance of creating entities with a wide range of abilities and understanding the real world in advancing artificial general intelligence. He believes that General AI has enormous potential as a powerful force for new quality productive forces. The mentality and value system of Tong Tong are similar to that of a three or four-year-old child, making it constantly being updated to integrate into different aspects of society, from assisting people without company to applications in home automation, healthcare, and education.

Tong Tong’s potential applications seem to go beyond personal use into broader societal benefits such as helping people facing demographic decline or increasing loneliness in a country like Japan where an aging population is becoming more prevalent daily.

The project is still ongoing with updates being made regularly which opens up possibilities for wide integration into various aspects of everyday life.

In conclusion, Tong Tong represents a significant milestone in AI technology development as it not only demonstrates technological capabilities but also highlights its potential impact on society as we know it today.

Today’s AI technology has been evolving rapidly over the past decade or so with great strides being made towards creating intelligent machines capable of mimicking human behavior. With advancements like these happening at an unprecedented pace
