In the aftermath of World War II, approximately 565,000 Hungarian Jews were brutally murdered in extermination camps, on death marches, and on the banks of the Danube where they were shot for being Jewish. Today, the March of Life takes place in Budapest to commemorate this tragic history and pay tribute to those who lost their lives.

Led by prominent figures such as Major General Doron Almog, KKL Chairman Yifat Ovadia-Losky, and Israel’s Ambassador to Hungary Jacob Handsman, along with numerous Holocaust survivors and their descendants, the march serves as a powerful symbol of resilience and strength for the Jewish community.

Major General Almog emphasized the current crisis facing the Jewish people with a rise in anti-Semitism reminiscent of World War II. However, he also highlighted the significant show of solidarity and support for the Jewish community, with notable fundraising efforts. The Jewish Agency is committed to combating anti-Semitism and ensuring the continued existence of the Jewish people with the support of Israel.

The March of Life holds special significance for many survivors like Marian Miller, who survived the Holocaust in Budapest. She participates in the march alongside her children and grandchildren as a symbol of victory and resilience. KKL Chairman Yifat Ovadia-Losky noted that this historic event takes place near the birthplace of State President Binyamin Ze’ev Herzl. Aviva Kenan, a survivor of Budapest’s ghetto during World War II, expressed her excitement about participating in this march while emphasizing that it is essential to remember what happened during that time period.
