The Minnesota State High School League’s Board of Directors recently approved the dates for the inaugural boys volleyball season. As recommended by the Boys Volleyball Advisory Committee, the official season will commence on March 17, 2025, with the state tournament set to take place from June 9-13. For its first season, boys volleyball will be a one-class activity, with 85 teams already registered to compete when the season kicks off next spring.

Boys volleyball was granted official sport status by the MSHSL Representative Assembly in May 2023 and has been operating as an “emerging sport” with guidance from the Minnesota Boys High School Volleyball Association. In 2023, the sport had 72 teams representing 78 schools. The board also finalized a draft of the Sunset Policy, outlining a process that offers various options for maintaining or discontinuing sports and activities that have less than 32 participating teams.

In addition to boys volleyball, the board discussed proposed seeding changes for the boys and girls basketball, as well as boys and girls hockey state tournaments. If these proposals are approved, all teams in each class would be seeded from 1 to 8 for the quarterfinals in all four tournaments. Currently, teams in the quarterfinals are seeded 1 through 5, with the remainder placed through a random draw.
