The Azteca Stadium, located in Mexico City, is set to host its third World Cup opener on June 11, 2026 when the Mexican national team plays their first game of the tournament. However, there is a risk that this may not happen due to ongoing remodeling to meet FIFA standards. According to reports from 365 Score Mexico, the stadium, owned by the Televisa Group, is behind schedule and FIFA has raised concerns.

FIFA has stated that the Azteca Stadium did not pass the tests for the 2026 World Cup and is currently delayed by 6 months from its planned remodeling schedule. On the other hand, two other stadiums in Mexico have complied with FIFA’s requirements: the BBVA Stadium in Monterrey and the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara.

Monterrey is on track to host four matches during the tournament, including two group stage games and one Round of 16 game. Guadalajara will also host four matches, all in the first round of the tournament. The only stadium that did not meet FIFA’s expectations during the first inspection was Club America’s home stadium.
