National Nutrition Month is a time for people to focus on their health and well-being through better food choices. Registered dietitian Beth Wyman has some valuable advice for those looking to make healthier choices when grocery shopping. Her mantra is simple: eat regularly, enjoy what you eat, and don’t overindulge.

One way to improve your nutrition is by adding more green vegetables to your plate, especially if you are iron deficient or anemic. Citrus fruits are also a great way to boost vitamin C intake, which can be particularly helpful during times when immunity needs a boost. When it comes to carbohydrates and fiber from sources like potatoes, moderation is key.

Allergies are a common issue during spring, but Wyman recommends local honey as a natural way to build immunity to pollen and reduce allergic reactions. The month-long celebration of registered dietitians by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics highlights the importance of making informed decisions about food choices.

Wyman advises filling half of your plate with vegetables, a quarter with protein, and a quarter with starch when it comes to nutrition. Additionally, she stresses the significance of developing a positive relationship with food in order to address emotional components related to eating habits. Working with a dietitian for guidance, along with counseling and behavioral health services, can be beneficial in achieving overall wellness.
