Two-thirds of cases of depression are attributed to prolonged excessive stress, while one-third is caused by genetic factors. Depression resulting from genetic factors cannot be prevented, but it is possible to prevent stress-related depression if it is addressed early on.

To be diagnosed with depression, individuals must exhibit at least one main symptom and four secondary symptoms that persist for more than two weeks. The primary symptom is a persistent feeling of melancholy, sadness, and lack of interest in activities. Additional symptoms may include appetite changes, sleep disturbances, social withdrawal, disinterest in hobbies, low self-esteem, suicidal thoughts, and cognitive impairment.

If you or a loved one notice these symptoms, prompt medical attention should be sought immediately. A healthcare professional can determine the root cause of the depression and recommend appropriate interventions. People with depression should not attempt to overcome it on their own and should seek help as soon as possible.

Nguyen Minh Man, head of the Clinical Psychology Unit at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, stresses the importance of early intervention in depression. Addressing the underlying cause of depression is crucial to provide effective support and treatment.
