The addition of competitive shooting as a coed intercollegiate sport at Valley City State University (VCSU) is an exciting announcement that has been met with enthusiasm by students, faculty and members of the community. This decision marks a significant milestone in the university’s efforts to provide students with opportunities to engage in activities they enjoy and officially represent VCSU.

President Alan LaFave expressed his excitement about offering clay target sports, which have been gaining in popularity. He emphasized the importance of allowing students to participate in activities, competitions, and groups they enjoy. The campus is thrilled to see the addition of the Shooting Sports Team this fall.

Team Coach and Professor Dr. Nick Galt is encouraging any interested students to visit VCSU to learn more about the Shooting Sports Team and its tuition assistance program. Currently, trap shooting is operated as a student-led club on campus, but with the formation of the new team, Dr. Galt hopes to see participation levels increase even further. Notable achievements of the VCSU Trap Club include Kaden Schafer’s first-place finish in Single Trap at the 2023 Fall Shootout with a perfect score of 100/100, as well as a first-place finish in American Trap at the 2023 North Dakota State Collegiate Clay Target Championship. The team practices at OH Range in Valley City.
