The finalists for Upstate high school boys athlete of the week from April 29-May 5 have been announced. Carson Boleman from Southside Christian and Wilfer Bustamante from J.L. Mann are among the contenders. Polls will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, and multiple votes are allowed. Last week’s winner was Landrum baseball player Titus Poore, who received over 5,000 votes.
In baseball playoff games, Carson Boleman pitched a complete game and struck out 17 batters in a 6-3 win against Lewisville, while Wilfer Bustamante scored two goals in a 3-2 soccer victory over Clover in the Upper State semifinals. Chansen Cole of Boiling Springs pitched a shutout, allowing only four hits and striking out seven batters, and also scored the winning run in a 1-0 win against Woodmont. Erik Erlenkeuser from T.L. Hanna shot 68 for medalist honors in the Region 1-AAAAA golf tournament.
In soccer victories, States Farr from Spartanburg homered, drove in three runs, scored two runs, and had two walks in a 7-1 victory against Rock Hill; Liam Montes from St. Joseph’s scored four goals in an 8-0 win against Bamberg-Ehrhardt; and Brody Pike from Powdersville scored eight goals and had three assists in three soccer victories.
Will Ruth from Dorman shot a 70 for a total of 142 at the Southern Cross Junior Invitational golf tournament in Aiken, while Mitch Wilson from Dorman homered in back-to-back games and finished with five RBIs after winning two baseball playoff games against Blythewood and Hillcrest.
