American teenage prodigy Ilia Malinin has won the gold medal at the World Figure Skating Championship with an extraordinary free skate. In every other figure-skater’s case, landing a quadruple axel is outside the realms of possibilities, attempted but never accomplished by an endless parade of skating greats. However, for Malinin, landing one is simply part of his routine. This remarkable feat propelled him to his first-ever world title after a record-breaking performance in the free skate.

Malinin, known as the ‘quad god’, was initially in third place after the short program but produced a stellar performance in the free skate to score 227.79, the highest ever in the competition. This performance elicited a wave of emotions and Malinin collapsed onto the ice in celebration. He described the competition as mentally and physically challenging in the build-up but was glad to have come out on top.

Skating to music from the TV series “Succession”, Malinin opened his free skate with a quadruple axel, landing five more quad jumps to disbelief of the audience. He is still the only man to successfully land a quadruple axel. Malinin won by a staggering 24 points, with Japan’s Kagiyama Yuma in second place and France’s Adam Siao Him Fa in third.
