In the first round of Slovakia’s presidential elections, former Foreign Minister Ivan Korcok emerged victorious with 42.51% of the votes. He will now face off against President of the Chamber Peter Pellegrini in the upcoming run-off on April 6. The election results have set up a showdown between pro-European Korcok and pro-Russian Prime Minister Robert Fico’s ally Pellegrini.

With all votes counted, Korcok received 42.51%, while Pellegrini got 37.05%. The candidates are now gearing up for the next round and are focusing on reaching out to more voters. Despite low turnout in the first round, which was only 51.91%, participation exceeded that of previous presidential elections held five years ago by a significant margin.

Over four million voters were called to choose a successor to President Zuzana Caputova, who announced she would not seek re-election for personal reasons. As the campaign for the run-off intensifies, both candidates are working hard to connect with voters and make their case for the presidency.
