The 2024 Under-18 IIHF Men’s World Championship was a thrilling game that showcased the talent and determination of young hockey players from around the world. Canada emerged victorious over the USA with a 6-4 win, thanks to some incredible performances by their star players.
The first two periods were dominated by the U.S., who outshot Canada by nearly twenty shots and took a 3-2 lead. However, midway through the third period, a pivotal moment occurred when USA’s Trevor Connelly hit Canadian winger Ryder Ritchie with a hard shot, resulting in a major penalty and a game misconduct for illegal checking to the head. This gave Canada an opportunity to capitalize on their opponents’ mistakes, and they did just that.
On the ensuing power play, Canada scored three goals to regain control of the game, thanks in large part to Gavin McKenna’s impressive performance. As an eligible player for the 2026 draft, McKenna recorded a hat trick and four points to lead his team to victory. His performance left a lasting impression on his teammates and fans alike, earning him recognition as one of the tournament’s standout players.
Captain Porter Martone described McKenna as “incredible,” highlighting his team’s resiliency and grit in coming back from what seemed like an insurmountable deficit. As for James Hagens, he was named MVP of the tournament after setting a new record for points in a single tournament. He also made it onto the media all-star team along with Carter George in goal, Cole Hutson and Luka Radivojevic on defense, and James Hagens, Gavin McKenna, and Porter Martone as forwards.
As NHL teams closely monitored the performances of standout players like Hagens and McKenna during this tournament, it became clear that this was just the beginning for these talented young hockey stars.
