Swedish Defensemen Erik Karlsson and Marcus Pettersson to Represent Sweden at 2024 IIHF World Championship

Erik Karlsson and Marcus Pettersson have been chosen to represent Sweden in the 2024 IIHF World Championship, as announced by the Swedish Ice Hockey Association. The tournament will take place from May 10-26 in Prague and Ostrava, Czechia.

Karlsson, 33, has represented Sweden at the World Championships before in 2010 and 2012, where they won bronze. He joined the Penguins this season after being traded from San Jose Sharks in August 2023. This season, he has led all Penguins defensemen in goals, assists, and points. Karlsson has had an impressive career with 817 points (189G-628A) in just over a thousand NHL games.

Pettersson, 27, set new career highs in offensive categories this season and played in all eighty-two games for Pittsburgh. He scored four goals, recorded twenty-six assists, and had thirty points during the regular season. Pettersson also achieved his first career game-winning goal against Montreal on January 27th and led the team with a plus-twenty-eight rating during that time frame.

As representatives of their home country on the world stage, Karlsson and Pettersson are excited to contribute to Team Sweden’s success at the IIHF World Championship.

The preliminary round schedule for Team Sweden has been announced for the tournament but broadcast information is yet to be provided at a later date.
