Dave McCarty, a former first baseman and outfielder for the Boston Red Sox team that won the World Series in 2004, passed away at the age of 54 in Oakland, California. The Red Sox confirmed his death was due to a cardiac event. McCarty was honored along with other members of the 2004 team at Fenway Park on April 9 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their victory and to remember Tim Wakefield and his wife, Stacy, who had both passed away from cancer in recent months.

McCarty was drafted by the Minnesota Twins with the third overall pick in 1991 from Stanford University. He played for a total of seven teams over 11 seasons, including the San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals, Tampa Bay Rays, Oakland Athletics, and Red Sox. During his career, McCarty appeared in 630 games and had a batting average of .242 with 36 home runs and 175 RBIs.

After retiring as a player, he worked as an analyst for NESN from 2005 to 2008. Kevin Youkilis, McCarty’s teammate on the Red Sox, expressed his condolences on social media
