Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), expressed grave concern over recent attacks targeting the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine during a meeting of the UN Security Council. The plant, which has been occupied by Russia since March 2022, faced a series of drone attacks in April, with both Moscow and Kyiv blaming each other for the incidents.

Grossi emphasized the reckless nature of these attacks, the first to directly target Europe’s largest power plant since November 2022. He stressed the importance of halting these attacks immediately to prevent a potential radiological incident. Despite the attacks not causing a nuclear accident this time, they significantly raised the risk at the compromised Zaporizhzhia power plant.

The director general of the IAEA highlighted the dangers posed by these attacks, as they set a dangerous precedent by successfully reaching the containment structure of a reactor. He emphasized that two years of war have greatly affected the safety of the plant, compromising all seven pillars of nuclear security and safety. Grossi warned that the risk of a nuclear accident is imminent and called for immediate action to prevent a catastrophic event.
