In a surprise move during a Broward School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata announced his resignation citing health concerns. Licata revealed that he has been undergoing treatment for a medical condition for several months and after discussing it with his family, including his wife and four adult children, he made the difficult decision to retire from his role as an educator after more than 30 years in South Florida.

Following Licata’s resignation, the Board voted 8-1 to replace him with Howard Hepburn, a deputy superintendent within the district. Hepburn will take over as superintendent on January 1st, 2022. This marks the fourth time in four years that Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) will have a new leader at the helm.

Licata thanked the community for their trust and support during his tenure as superintendent. He believes that BCPS is on track for even greater accomplishments in the future. With Licata’s last day set for December 31st, BCPS will now begin its search for its fourth superintendent in four years. Stay tuned to WSVN.com and 7News for further updates on this ongoing story.
