Meta and OpenAI are both reportedly working on developing advanced AI models that can help with problem-solving and undertake more complex tasks. According to Joelle Pineau, Meta’s vice-president of AI research, the upcoming Llama 3 model is expected to be able to talk, reason, plan and have memory. Meanwhile, Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s chief operating officer, has stated that the next version of their GPT model will show progress in solving “hard problems” like reasoning.

Both companies have expressed their ambition to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI) through these advancements. AGI refers to AI that can perform at a human level or better in a wide range of tasks. However, there are concerns about developing technology that surpasses human intelligence. Some experts urge caution to avoid potential risks to humanity. Elon Musk has also warned about the rapid advancement of AI, predicting that it could outsmart humans in a matter of years.

The progression of AI models to reason and plan is seen as a significant step towards achieving AGI. As industry experts like John Carmack describe it, AGI is the “big brass ring” that organizations are striving for. With the development of advanced AI models, Meta and OpenAI hope to unlock new possibilities for solving complex problems and creating valuable monetary opportunities.
