Elenos Group’s Broadcast Electronics has introduced MDCL+, a new technology aimed at reducing energy costs for AM broadcasters. This technology is compatible with both new and existing BE AM transmitters and will be presented at the 2024 NAB Show in Las Vegas.

MDCL+ works by using modulation-dependent carrier-level algorithms to analyze modulation characteristics and adjust transmitter power as needed. By doing this, power consumption and cooling costs can be reduced, potentially saving stations over 50% on their electricity bills. For example, a 10kW AM station in the United States could save over $12,000 annually if they operate continuously at an average electricity rate of 20 cents per kilowatt-hour. Stations in areas with higher electricity rates may see even greater savings.

This system adjusts power levels based on the audio being broadcasted, decreasing power during louder segments and increasing it during quieter moments. This helps to mask any increase in received noise with the program content. Installation of MDCL+ is quick and easy, taking under 30 minutes on most BE transmitters and slightly longer on other modern brands post-2000. It also requires minimal adjustments to audio processing to maintain audio quality while maximizing power savings.

President and COO of Elenos Group, Rich Redmond, emphasized how MDCL+ was designed to help AM broadcasters upgrade their existing equipment without needing to replace their transmitters. This allows operators to extend their investment in infrastructure and minimize operating costs simultaneously. Broadcast Electronics will be showcasing MDCL+ at the Elenos booth W3151 during the NAB Show.
