Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair Attracts 116 Projects from Kindergarten to Grade 12

The Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair, held on April 11 at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), was a huge success with a total of 116 projects selected from kindergarten to grade 12. Students from Langley, Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, and Hope participated in the fair either as a class, group or individual. The projects covered a wide range of topics including plant photosynthesis to global warming and mental health. Some students even showcased a 3D printer.

At Dasmesh Punjabi School in Abbotsford, students were excited to participate in the fair. The selection process began in the classroom with each class choosing five projects which were then narrowed down to three. These top three projects were presented at the regional fair. Grade 4 student Gurnihaal Singh Bains expressed her surprise at making it through the first round and highlighted the excitement and anticipation surrounding the event.

The Science Fair aims to inspire students’ interest in science and foster a love for the subject. For Grade 8 students Japandeep Gill and Metaab Khangura, the fair provided an opportunity to showcase their innovative ideas. Khangura, inspired by a missed flight due to parking troubles, developed a sensor that helps drivers locate parking spots in busy lots and easily find their vehicles upon return. Both Gill and Khangura expressed their desire to advance to the national level, eagerly awaiting the results of the awards ceremony scheduled for April 17.

The fair not only encouraged students to explore scientific topics but also provided them with a platform to share their ideas and innovations. From young scientists like Avneet Singh Sandhu to aspiring inventors like Gill and Khangura, the Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair showcased
