Laurie Sullivan, a science/STEM teacher at Barrett Elementary School in Arlington, has been named a finalist for the 2024 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. This honor is considered the top recognition for K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics teachers in the nation.

In addition to Laurie Sullivan, educators from Goochland County and the city of Martinsville were also named as finalists in Virginia. These finalists were selected by review committees organized by the Virginia Department of Education. Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Coons expressed pride in the selection of these three teachers from Virginia and is honored to have them represent the state in the national competition.

The national selection committee will now review the applications of the state finalists for the 2024 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The winners of this prestigious award will be announced by the White House. The competition recognizes educators who excel in teaching mathematics and science and have a significant impact on their students and schools.
