The UN General Assembly may submit a resolution on May 10 recognizing Palestine as an equal member of the Security Council. However, a similar resolution was recently blocked by the United States in the Security Council. The decisions made by the General Assembly are only advisory and do not automatically result in the creation of a Palestinian state. An overwhelming majority of UN members is expected to vote in support of the resolution.

Israel’s representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, has suggested that if the resolution is adopted, the United States should consider stopping funding to the international organization, similar to what was done with UNESCO when it granted full membership status to the Palestinian Authority. It is essential to remember that in 1988, the Palestinian National Council declared independence of Palestine, which was supported by 140 UN members and many states recognized it shortly after. However, it did not lead to creating an independent Palestinian state.
