The Van Hool bus builder in Koningshooikt is facing a major decision as the bankruptcy application has been postponed for another week. This gives the curators more time to work towards a smooth restart. It is expected that the bankruptcy will be filed early next week, and the VDL Groep consortium and German trailer builder Schmitz Cargobull are likely to be announced as the acquirers.

However, sources reveal that the consortium may not save as many jobs as initially outlined in the recovery plan by crisis manager Marc Zwaaneveld. They may relocate a large portion of production to North Macedonia and limit activities in Koningshooikt, where Van Hool’s current site is located. The consortium’s primary interest is in the Van Hool brand name, patents, and foreign activities.

Dumarey Group, another candidate, initially promised to save more jobs in Belgium but has encountered obstacles related to property valuation. Concerns about soil pollution on part of their site have led to disputes over price and potential government intervention in remediation costs. Additionally, Dumarey Group’s financial position may be a challenge in meeting restart requirements.

The union is advocating for an acquirer who will retain as many jobs as possible and ensure continuity of industrial jobs in the region. The fate of Van Hool rests on the decision of acquirer, Flemish government, and banks involved in process. Ultimately, this decision will determine future of Van Hool and its employees in Koningshooikt.
