In the afternoon of Monday, several firefighting crews battled heavy flames at an auto business in north Lincoln. The blaze was reported at Lincoln Cars near 23rd Street and Cornhusker Highway around 2:30 p.m. According to MJ Lierman, spokeswoman for Lincoln Fire & Rescue, the fire started after someone heard a “pop sound.” Battalion Chief Mark Majors stated that a car caught fire and caused the flames to spread quickly to the building, though the cause of the vehicle fire is still unknown.

The strong winds made it difficult for firefighters to enter the building and they had to take a defensive approach. They used aerial tactics to spray water from above, which is not commonly used in such situations. One of their main concerns was preventing the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings. Fortunately, they were able to save one of them from destruction. However, Lincoln Cars sustained significant damage with parts of its roof and west wall collapsing, leaving there is a risk of more of it falling down soon.

The total estimated damage is $650,000 and unfortunately, there were no injuries reported as a result of this event. Majors emphasized on how dangerous this situation was and how important it is for everyone to take precautions when it comes to protecting both firefighters and nearby properties. The quick response and coordinated effort from emergency crews helped prevent further damage from happening.
