Cabo Delgado province has seen a sharp rise in insurgent violence in February 2024. The attacks have taken place across several districts, including Chiure in the south, Macomia, Meluco and Quissanga in the center, and Mocímboa da Praia in the north. Insurgents targeted both security forces and civilians and made an alarming attempt to burn down churches.

On February 9th, a large insurgent group consisting of over 150 fighters attacked a security forces position in Mucojo, Macomia. This attack resulted in the death of at least 20 soldiers. Islamic State Mozambique (ISM) claimed responsibility for killing 25 people, including military personnel and civilians. ISM’s newspaper Al Naba published a disturbing image of dead bodies wearing military uniforms, some of whom were beheaded. This attack is said to be the deadliest incident for security forces since the Palma attack in March 2021.

In Macomia district, ongoing insurgent activities along the N380 continue to pose a threat to residents. On February 10th, insurgents clashed with Local Forces, resulting in the death of at least one civilian who fled to Chai village located 3km south of Litamanda. Three days later on February 13th, insurgents attacked Chai village resulting in the death of at least one person who was reportedly a member of Local Forces by IS claims. The situation facing residents is dire as these relentless attacks have caused widespread fear and displacement across the region.

The escalating violence has led to an increase in humanitarian aid efforts from organizations such as UNICEF and Doctors Without Borders (MSF). These groups are working tirelessly to provide food aid and medical care to those affected by this conflict.

Cabo Delgado province must take immediate action against these violent acts if they want peace to prevail in their region. The government must work with international partners to develop effective strategies that will help put an end to this terrorism once and for all.

In conclusion, Cabo Delgado province has experienced an unprecedented surge of insurgent violence during February 2024. The attacks have been directed against both security forces and civilians with no regard for human life or religious tolerance. It is essential that urgent measures are taken to stop this violence before it spreads further across Mozambique or beyond its borders.
