The German Ministry of Environment has announced stricter restrictions on the import of hunting trophies into the country, prompting Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi to propose sending 20,000 elephants to Germany. President Masisi believes that efforts to preserve wildlife only lead to the impoverishment of Botswanans and an increase in the number of elephants. He also argues that hunting helps keep the elephant population under control.

President Masisi urged Germany to live with animals like Botswana does. As the third country in the world with over 130,000 elephants, Botswana has previously donated elephants to Angola and offered hundreds of elephants to Mozambique to help preserve their declining populations. President Masisi expressed his genuine desire to gift elephants to Germany, emphasizing that he was serious and would not accept no as an answer.
