Bees are remarkable creatures that exhibit distinct characteristics and behaviors. One widespread misconception is that all bee species perish after stinging, but in reality, only eight out of almost 21,000 bee species worldwide die when they sting. Unlike popular belief, a bee’s stinger is not an organ dedicated to defense but a modified ovipositor, which has been adapted for laying eggs.

In terms of protecting their hives and nests, bees employ various defense mechanisms apart from stinging. Stingless bees can defend their nests by biting when provoked. Male bees, known as drones, lack stingers and rely on worker bees to assist with feeding.

Bees have one of the most distinctive traits among insects: their communication method. Honeybees use a dance called the ‘waggle dance’ to convey information about the best source of food to their nestmates. This intricate form of communication allows them to share vital information with each other effectively.
