Pitted scars, also known as concave scars, are a common issue that occurs due to skin tissue damage causing degradation of collagen, elastin fibers, and fatty tissue beneath the skin. These scars can form in various shapes and sizes, making them a significant concern for many individuals.

Dr. Vo Thi Tuong Duy, a Dermatology specialist at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, notes that pitted scars make up a significant percentage of scar cases compared to hypertrophic and keloid scars. The causes of pitted scars include squeezing acne, improper removal of blisters, and inadequate treatment of wounds from surgery, accidents, or burns.

While these scars do not naturally fill on their own, there are several specialized treatment methods available to effectively treat them. Laser therapy involves using different types of lasers to stimulate skin regeneration and reduce the appearance of scars. Biological skin peeling uses acid-based solutions to remove the epidermis and promote collagen and elastin production. Platelet-rich plasma therapy utilizes the patient’s own blood to stimulate cell growth and collagen production. Needle rolling creates micro-lesions in the skin to increase collagen in the treated area, while scar base separation helps elevate the scar bottom for a smoother appearance.

It is crucial for patients to consult with a dermatologist before undergoing any treatment for their pitted scars. While these treatments can be highly effective, improper execution can lead to complications such as scarring, burns, hyperpigmentation, and infections.
