Georgia has been ranked in the top 5 worst states for mental health care in 2024, according to a recent study by Forbes Advisor. The study compared all 50 states and Washington, D.C., across seven key metrics to determine the worst states for mental health care.

One of the challenges facing Georgians seeking mental health treatment is high costs. Additionally, the state has limited treatment centers and lacks adequate insurance coverage for many residents. In fact, Georgia had the highest percentage of adults unable to see a doctor for mental health due to cost and the fourth fewest mental health treatment centers per 10,000 businesses in the study.

Texas was found to be the worst state overall, with a second-highest percentage of uninsured adults with a mental illness and a second-highest percentage of youth with depression not receiving mental health services. Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi were also among the worst states for mental health care.

Mental Health America reports that over half of adults with a mental illness do not receive any treatment, and over one in four do not receive adequate treatment across the country. This highlights the need for improved access to affordable mental health care in all states.
