At 27 years old, I contracted mumps despite being married for three years and having no children. Concerned about my fertility, I wondered if the complications from mumps could be causing infertility. The damage that mumps can cause to the seminiferous tubules can vary in severity, leading to permanent damage, testicular atrophy, reduced sperm production, and ultimately infertility with no sperm in semen tests. This complication can affect individuals of all ages, especially those in puberty or of reproductive age who have not yet had children.

Being married for three years without children and not using contraception indicates potential infertility. Seeking medical attention is crucial as an accurate diagnosis is necessary to determine the cause of infertility. Upon visiting the Reproductive Support Center at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, I underwent thorough examinations such as ultrasounds, semen tests, and genetic screenings to assess the extent of damage caused by mumps complications. Depending on the results, treatments such as sperm retrieval and microdissection of testicular tissue may be recommended. Techniques like intracytoplasmic sperm injection and embryo culture can also be utilized to increase the chances of successful fertilization.

It’s important to recognize that infertility could stem from issues with either the husband or the wife or both. Therefore, my wife should also undergo comprehensive reproductive health evaluations to develop an appropriate treatment plan. By addressing any potential obstacles in both partners’ reproductive health, we can work towards increasing the chances of conceiving through techniques like IVF.
