Mirabai Chanu, the silver medal winner at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, is set to return to action at the IWF World Cup 2024 in Phuket, Thailand. This event will be crucial for her as it is the final qualifying event for weightlifting in the Paris Olympics.

Despite suffering a hip injury at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year, Mirabai Chanu has been determined to secure an Olympic quota for India in the women’s 49 kg category. She achieved a total lift of 200 kg at the World Weightlifting Championships 2022, placing her second in the Olympic Qualification Ranking for her division.

The OQR is determined by an athlete’s best total lifts in qualifying competitions. The top ten athletes in the OQR rankings by April 28th will secure quotas for their countries in Paris 2024 Olympics. Bindyarani Devi, a Commonwealth Games silver medalist, will also have an opportunity to improve her score and qualify for Paris 2024 by competing in the women’s 59 kg category where she currently ranks 29th.
