San Antonio’s Tower of the Americas is set to undergo a new design for its grounds, with Hemisfair planning to construct a “Sports Court” pavilion in place of the existing pond at the base of the structure. This project forms part of the planned Tower Park at Hemisfair and has received philanthropic support for funding.

Hemisfair introduced the first phase of Civic Park last fall, adding green space to the grounds west of the tower. The new pavilion is a response to feedback from the public about the need for more public recreation spaces. It will replace the existing pond, which has been in place since 1988 but has been deemed to have a negative impact due to unpleasant odors.

While renderings of the project are not yet available, it is expected that the pavilion will consist of a concrete slab primarily used as a basketball court. It will feature a 28-foot oval roof to provide shade for spectators. The space will also be available for community events and can be rented for such purposes.
