On Thursday, DMV offices across the country experienced outages that impacted appointments and services in multiple states. The network connecting motor vehicle agencies and verification services was affected by a loss in cloud connectivity. This outage lasted from 9:50 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. ET, preventing the processing of messages needed for driver licenses and vehicle titles.

In response to the outage, DMV officials nationwide scrambled to communicate with the public about the issue. Illinois Secretary of State Alexander Giannoulias shared on X that a nationwide network outage had impacted all DMVs across the country. In Colorado, the DMV reached out to residents with appointments at State Driver License Offices to reschedule due to the national outage. Most driver license services, including online options, were affected in Colorado, with no timeline given for when services would be restored.

In Virginia, driver’s license services were unavailable online and in-person due to a third-party technical outage. Massachusetts’ Registry of Motor Vehicles also stated that they were unable to process any license or ID related transactions due to the national system outage. As DMV officials and cloud providers work to determine the root cause of the outage, services across the country remain impacted, affecting driver license issuance and other related transactions in multiple states.
