Despite rising prices of chocolate this year, the French have continued their tradition of Easter egg hunts. According to data from NielsenIQ France, chocolate consumption for Easter actually increased by 0.5% in 2024, despite a 6.5% increase in the average price per kilo.
The increase in chocolate prices can be attributed to a variety of factors, including a 162% increase in the world price of Cocoa between Easter 2023 and Easter 2024, largely due to global warming and the El Niño storm impacting Africa. Chocolatier Lindt announced a 5% price increase for 2024, following a 10% increase the previous year.
Interestingly, chocolates targeted towards adults performed better in sales compared to chocolates for children. Ferrero Rocher emerged as the top-selling brand with almost 420 tonnes sold, followed by Lindt rabbits with 272 tonnes, and Kinder Schokobons with 229 tonnes.
