Rearden, a VFX company, has filed a lawsuit against The Walt Disney Company over the use of its patented technology in the last two Avengers movies. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Marvel used the MOVA Contour Reality Capture technology to animate major characters in the blockbusters. However, a federal judge has dismissed a part of the case against Marvel due to lack of evidence.

Despite this, Rearden has been given an opportunity to amend its claim and provide proof that Marvel may have benefited from its technology. If successful, Disney could face major damages and be forced to relinquish a significant portion of its earnings from Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which made over $6 billion globally. This situation could also potentially damage Marvel’s goodwill as it faces challenges with recent box office releases not performing as expected.
