On Friday, more than 25 American congressmen from both the Democratic and Republican parties presented a bill to impose sanctions on Azerbaijan. Authored by Congresswomen Dina Titus and Gus Bilirakis, the bill includes individual sanctions against over 40 Azerbaijani officials and security forces.

Initially, the list of names targeted for sanctions was 41, but it was later expanded to 44. The resolution proposes imposing sanctions on Azerbaijan for ongoing human rights violations, including crimes against Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to Politico magazine, Congresswoman Titus stated that sanctions should be imposed on Azerbaijani officials for ethnic cleansing against Armenians in Artsakh and repression of the opposition.

The bill has sparked controversy and garnered attention from various media outlets. Some argue that imposing sanctions could harm Azerbaijan’s economy and worsen the situation on the ground, while others believe that taking action is necessary to address human rights violations and stand up against injustice. As the bill makes its way through the legislative process, it is expected to be a topic of debate and discussion among lawmakers.
