Vanadzor Council of Elders elections in 2021 were won by Mamikon Aslanyan’s political party, which should have allowed him to continue serving as the head of the community. However, soon after the elections, law enforcement officers initiated a criminal case against Aslanyan for expropriating lands in Vanadzor through fraudulent documents during his time in office. Despite this, two of his subordinates, a lawyer and the chief architect of the community, were also charged but are currently free.

Aslanyan claims that the case against him is politically motivated and believes it is part of a larger political agenda. He has been in prison since December 2021 and was denied release from custody today when the court rejected his petition.
