The demarcation of borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan is set to begin, bringing an end to over a century of conflicts in the Caucasus region. The announcement was made by both countries’ ministries of interior, with experts beginning to clarify coordinates based on geodesic studies.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan recently agreed to return four border towns to Azerbaijan, sparking protests by Armenians fearing isolation and loss of property. However, the demarcation work has begun without any transfer of territory, according to the Armenian Ministry of the Interior.

Both Armenia and Azerbaijan are former Soviet republics that have faced off in two wars resulting in thousands of casualties on both sides. After Armenia’s defeat in 2020, it had to relinquish control over significant parts of Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan, ending a decades-long conflict in the region.

The demarcation of borders based on Soviet-era maps is seen as a necessary step for both countries to maintain peace and stability in the region. They acknowledge the importance of resolving border disputes to prevent further conflicts from arising.
