Apple is rumored to showcase a range of AI features in iOS 18, which is expected to be unveiled at WWDC 2024 on June 10. To enhance these features, Apple has reportedly acquired a French startup specializing in AI. According to a report by French business magazine Challenges (via 9To5Mac), Apple has purchased Paris-based startup Datakalab, known for its AI and computer vision technology.

The acquisition was finalized in December 2023, though news of it has only recently emerged. Datakalab had between 10-20 employees prior to its acquisition and specialized in low power, runtime efficient, and deep learning algorithms for devices. The official website of Datakalab is no longer active, but Apple now holds a 100% stake in the company that was founded seven years ago by brothers Xavier and Lucas Fischer.

While there has been no official confirmation of the acquisition from either Datakalab or Apple, Challenges reports that details of the deal were submitted to the European Commission. The founders of Datakalab did not join Apple, but multiple other employees transitioned to the tech giant. This acquisition aligns with Apple’s plans to incorporate AI features into iOS 18 and leverage Datakalab’s expertise in computer vision technology for its Vision Pro initiatives in the future.
