The U.S. women’s hockey team is currently dominating the world championship quarterfinals in Utica, New York, with a 10-0 victory over Japan. The team is led by Alex Carpenter and Abbey Murphy, who both scored two goals each, while Hilary Knight contributed one goal and three assists to secure their spot in the semifinals. Joy Dunne, the youngest player on the team at just 18 years old, made history by becoming the youngest U.S. woman to score at a worlds tournament since Sarah Parsons in 2005.
Knight and Kendall Coyne Schofield moved up the ranks in the career assists list, trailing behind Canadian Hall of Famer Hayley Wickenheiser by just three assists. Knight already holds the records for career points and goals in world championship history. Aerin Frankel played a stellar game by stopping all 14 shots from Japan.
The U.S. team is aiming for a repeat world title and will face 2022 Olympic bronze medalist Finland in the upcoming semifinals. The other semifinal matchup will feature 2022 Olympic champion Canada against Czechia, who claimed the world bronze medal in the last two years. The U.S. and Canada have a long-standing rivalry in women’s hockey, having faced each other in 21 out of the 22 world championship gold-medal games
