In a thrilling overtime match, Canada emerged victorious over the U.S., 6-5, to win the women’s hockey world championship title in Utica, New York on Sunday. The deciding goal was scored by Danielle Serdachny with just one second remaining on a power play after the U.S. was penalized for having too many skaters on the ice. This marked Canada’s reclamation of the world title after the U.S.’s victory in 2023.
The game was marked by intense action, with both teams exchanging goals within three minutes of each other throughout regulation time, resulting in a total of four occasions. This was the highest-scoring game between these rivals since their meeting in the 2015 World Championship final when the U.S. won 7-5 over Canada. Over the past 13 finals between these nations, only one goal has separated them, with eight of those games going to overtime.
Canada and the U.S. have shared every world title since the tournament began in 1990, with Canada winning 13 titles and the U.S., ten titles each. American player Laila Edwards made history as she became the youngest non-goalie to ever be named world championship MVP at just 20 years old. Edwards made her debut for senior national team in November and became first Black woman to do so at any level of senior hockey in North America when she played for Black Girls Rock! Hockey League team – which is composed entirely of girls aged between five and 18 – during their annual tournament against New York Islanders youth team that year before joining US Women’s National Team roster later that year .
