I recently attended a lecture at Caltech’s Beckman auditorium on “How Soil Microbes Help Us Fight Climate Change.” The speaker was graduate student Hannah Dion-Kirschner, and her presentation was both informative and engaging.

The audience consisted of students from various schools, ranging from fifth to sixth grade. Despite their young age, the students were fully focused on the lecture. Dion-Kirschner took them on an exciting journey through the microscopic world of soil microbes and their impact on our atmosphere. She used parallels between her scientific research and playing the piano to emphasize the importance of practice and the scientific method.

During the presentation, Dion-Kirschner highlighted the crucial role that microbes play in combating climate change. She even incorporated a piano performance into her talk, which added an extra element of excitement for the audience. As she interacted with both students and teachers, she further enriched their learning experience.

Overall, this lecture had a profound impact not only on the young students but also on myself. It was clear that Caltech is creating a supportive and engaging environment for scientific learning, which is truly inspiring. I am grateful for having been able to attend such an incredible event.
