In 1999, the United Way of Acadiana established the Women Who Mean Business Awards to recognize influential leaders in their professions and communities. Out of the 63 nominations received from UWA’s service areas, six women were selected as finalists. These honorees will be recognized during a ceremony on May 9 at The Jefferson on 1913 Kaliste Saloom Road.

The Trailblazer Award specifically honors retired or semi-retired women who have made significant contributions for future generations. This year, Phebe Hayes, a retired professor and dean emerita at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and founder of The Iberia African American Historical Society, has been chosen as the Trailblazer Award recipient.

Other honorees include Missy Bienvenu Andrade, president and CEO of Community Foundation of Acadiana, Roya Boustany, chief prosecutor at the 15th Judicial District Court, Diane Meaux Broussard, Vermilion Parish clerk of court, Ellen Nora, Solomon House executive director, and Fumy Rita, LAGCOE executive director. Heather Blanchard, president and CEO of United Way of Acadiana, expressed pride in honoring these remarkable women from the community.

The ceremony this year will be more intimate with informal seating and elegant décor, allowing attendees to engage in conversation over hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. KADN news anchor Marcelle Fontenot will be the emcee for the event.
