The USDA has announced that agricultural producers can now apply to enroll in the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). The program, run by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), is investing nearly $11 million to support farmers in protecting and improving natural resources and habitat for migratory birds and other avian species in targeted areas.

In Arkansas, NRCS will provide up to $4 million in financial assistance in fiscal year 2024 through the Migratory Bird Resurgence Initiative (MBRI) to create habitat on private lands. This will help sustain migratory bird populations and enhance climate resiliency and carbon stewardship on working lands. By providing more nesting, food, and resting areas for migratory birds, the initiative aims to improve habitat for wildlife and promote natural resource conservation.

The EQIP – MBRI is also available in California, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Texas. Agricultural producers interested in receiving financial assistance should submit their applications by May 17, 2024 for funding consideration this year. While applications are accepted year-round for EQIP financial assistance, specific program deadlines are in place for ranking and funding opportunities within each state.
