In Santa Clara, California, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) announced that it will begin production of a new chip manufacturing technology called “A16” in the second half of 2026. During a conference, co-Chief Operating Officer Y.J. Mii highlighted that this technology will allow for power delivery to computing chips from the backside of the chip, enhancing the speed of artificial intelligence chips. This development has been a major point of competition between TSMC and its US rival Intel in the chip manufacturing industry.

TSMC is widely recognized as the world’s largest contract manufacturer of chips, providing services to clients such as Nvidia. Currently, TSMC produces the fastest chips in the world. However, Intel made a statement in March claiming that it expects to surpass TSMC in chip speed with its “14A” technology by 2026. This announcement has sparked renewed competition between the two major players in the chip market.

As technological advancements continue to drive innovation and efficiency in chip manufacturing, fierce competition remains within the industry as companies strive to meet growing consumer and business demands for faster and more efficient chips. The developments by TSMC and Intel suggest that the race for innovation and speed in chip manufacturing is far from over.
